Byron Bay’s craft brew scene has blown up over the last few years. Nowadays, the Northern Rivers is renowned worldwide for its quality craft brews, and the breweries behind them. 

At Behind the Barrel, we’re living the dream – we get to spend every day visiting award-winning breweries, and sharing our passion with others! So, here’s a list of some of our favourite Byron brews, and the awesome powerhouses behind them. 

 

Stone & Wood

A pioneer in Australia’s craft beer scene, Stone & Wood has been around for a long time and a good time. Each year, they release their limited-release selection, and let us tell you now, they never miss. This year’s collection features Mango Pale Ale, Hinterland Hazy Pale Ale, and Jasper Ale. 

 

Mango Pale Ale. 

This year, summer’s been bottled in the form of Stone & Wood’s Mango Pale Ale. Crafted from Galaxy® hops, and balanced with real mango puree, this brew is the perfect blend to pair with long summer days and backyard barbeques. Light and fresh, with a low bitterness (IBU 15) and sitting at an easy drinking of 4.6%, it’s the perfect drink for summer.   

 

Hinterland Hazy Pale Ale 

If you’re looking for a beer that’s vibrant with succulent tropical flavours, low on bitterness with a golden haze and full-bodied finish, then Stone & Wood’s Hinterland Hazy Pale Ale is for you. Crafted using three Aussie hops; Vic Secret, Eclipse, and Galaxy, they’ve created a beer that pairs well with just about anything! Best enjoyed cool, straight from the fridge, this brew is the perfect accompaniment for summertime. 

 

Jasper Ale 

Here for a good time and not a long time, Stone & Wood’s Jasper Ale pays homage to the Hinterland’s history, named after its village Federal, known as Jasper. This hoppy red ale, recognisable by its trademark ruby hue and caramel sweetness, is crafted from the culmination of Galaxy, Enigma, and Mosaic hops. The Jasper Ale features a smooth and velvety mouthfeel, thanks to its selection of roasted malts, busting with hints of caramel, toffee, and hazelnut finishing with a twist of bitterness. Its rich and heavy flavours mean that it pairs best with roasted meats in the cooler months. 

 

Wandana Brewing Co. 

The only brewery in the world to play music, non-stop to each beer they brew, Wandana has cemented itself as a pioneer in the Australian craft beer scene with their unique approaches. Each brew is paired with its respective playlist – dependent on the song’s vibrations, and therefore its effect on yeast cells. Ginchai – Chai Spiced Ginger Beer

A unique twist on a summer favourite, Wandana’s Ginchai is a masterful blend of iconic flavours. Its organic spice blend features turmeric, chilli, ginger, lemongrass, cloves and cardamom, making it the perfect balance of refreshing yet exciting flavours. 

 

Flamenco Grapefruit Sour
